Son,
it is simple. Whenever your desires are fulfilled, that in itself
will create a chain of problems, because of your attachment to what
you have attained. And having attained the object of your desire,
your next move will be to protect it, and your sense of possessiveness
will only continue to increase. The mind becomes very turbulent, whether
you get what you want or not.
In your struggle to safeguard whatever you have gathered, you will
lose your peace of mind. The real problem then is attachment which
is caused by the problematic mind. Attachment is a disease. If a person
is to attached, it can even make him go insane.
You cannot be attached to anything in the world and at the same time
be at peace, because too much attachment to anything builds up a lot
of tension in the mind, and this is bound to create pain. When you
are too attached to anything, the excitement and anxiety born out
of that attachment accelerates the thought process and intensifies
the chaos of the mind.
The pressure that builds up is such that you mind becomes uncontrollable.
You don't know in which direction to turn, and you lose all sense
of clarity. Your mind becomes like a forest after a cyclone. Until
now you could to some degree watch things from a distance as they
occurred in your life. But now, the pressure of attachment has reached
it's peak, the burden has become too heavy, and you don't know what
to do or how to face it.
You lose your grip on life, and feeling utterly lonely and disappointed,
you become an easy victim of your mind. You will drown in your thoughts,
they will overwhelm you and swallow you up as you become identified
with the mind and all it's negative emotions. An emotional breakdown
takes place and you are forced into the darkest realms of the mind.
You may even go mad. This is what attachment can do.
Mother will tell you a story that She has heard. A man was visiting
a mental hospital where the doctor was a close friend of his. The
doctor took him around and showed him the patients.
In one cell a man was sitting on a chair, rocking back and forth while
he happily repeated the name "Pumpum Pumpum, Pumpum
"
over and over again.
The visitor said to the doctor "Poor fellow. What is his problem?
Who is this Pumpum?"
The doctor replied "Pumpum was his beloved. She jilted him and
ran away with another man, which is why he went insane."
The visitor sighed and went on to visit the other patients. As they
approached one cell, the visitor was surprised to see another man
sitting in his cell hitting his head against the wall as he uttered
the name "Pumpum, Pumpum, Pumpum
"
The visitor asked the doctor "What is this? Has Pumpum something
to do with this man too?"
The doctor replied "Yes, this is the man who Pumpum finally married."
Such
are the effects of the disease of attachment.
